Summary 2 - Finding Water

Finding Water

The Bedouin used the wells as a source of water and a way to navigate in the desert. They survived by looking for water, food and shelter.

Bedouin knew the location of wells by reading clues like birds’ flight and twittering and calculated it by the presence of vegetation. A well dug in 1964 well is still used to give directions to people. In difficult situations, the Bedouin used camels to store water due its large stomach and they would kill it whenever they needed water. The Bedouin also used camels’ and goats’ milk as a replacement for water.

The Bedouin are used to the desert and can handle dehydration weight loss more than normal people. They can survive an extra 24 hours without water, but depends on the shade and temperature.

Summary 1 - The Masdar Project

The Masdar Project

Abu Dhabi’s clean energy company (Masdar) is planning to build a US 200$ million wind farm, which is a one of a kind project in the region.

There isn’t a lot of wind in the gulf area; the project will generate more energy by using specialized blades which are being developed now. Masdar Company is owned by Mubadala Development, which built two 100 megawatts solar plant projects and a smaller wind farm in Sir Bani Yas Island. The wind farm will produce a lot more megawatts than the solar plants. Adrian Wood, the regional head of renewable energy at Siemens, stated that having the right land, right wind and the grid collection are all important elements for making a wind farm. Masdar estimated that it would take at least US 200$ to build the wind farms.

Karim Nassif, an analyst stated that the project could move the UAE forward. but it will require government subsidy to move forward. However, it will be hard because the project is the first of its kind, and therefore needs government support.
